S.T.E.M. Pirates is designed to teach critical thinking and problem solving skills. This class was made with the young adventurer with the vivid imagination in mind. Our goal is for students to walk away with an excitement and interest in math, science, and learning. We foster an environment for students to release a lot of energy through movement and play. At the end of the lesson, students are excited to tell others what they have learned, and they want to learn more about the world of pirates.
Each class will have a different set of problems to solve, and we will use imaginative play to create a special experience. We will learn about various problem solving methods, word problem skills, and engineering properties. Students will play games that will enhance their creativity and work on their skills.
A typical class would begin with a scavenger hunt around the room. Students would search for buried treasure that will lead to that day's main challenge. Once students find the chest, they may discover a hidden scroll in it with a riddle to solve. The riddle leads to the teacher being a pirate all along! The pirate has taken the gemstones their teacher intended to give them. To get them back, they will need to reach them by building a pully system. They will have all the materials they need, but they will have no instructions because they are wet and the ink has been smudged. Once they brainstorm, problem solve, collaborate, and build, they will be able to reach their treasure.
